How to convert MP4 to M4V

11. Upload your video
Drag an MP4 onto the page or click “Upload”. Up to 1 GB per file, including 4K and HEVC.

M4V is pre-selected. Keep H.264 or HEVC as it is, and the video track is copied instead of re-encoded, so the job takes seconds.
33. Download and add it to the library
Add the file to the Apple TV app or iTunes and it appears under Movies or Home Videos, with chapter markers and subtitle tracks intact.
Apple software treats it as a movie
Apple built M4V for the iTunes Store, so its own apps sort an .m4v file into the video library and read the chapter markers and subtitle tracks inside. The same file named .mp4 is often filed in the wrong place.
No quality loss from re-encoding
M4V is Apple's version of the MPEG-4 container, so nothing has to be re-encoded. Converting to WMV or DivX is different: the picture is decoded and compressed again, and some detail is lost.
