From video to WebM in three steps, VP9 by default
11. Upload your video
Drag an MP4 onto the page or click “Upload”. MOV, MKV and AVI go through the same WebM converter. Up to 1 GB per file.
22. VP9 for size, VP8 for older browsers
WebM is pre-selected with VP9, which gives the same quality in noticeably less space than H.264. Switch to VP8 only for very old browsers, and expect a larger file if you do.
33. Download and serve it
Put the WebM in a video element, upload it to Wikimedia Commons or use it as a Telegram video sticker. There is no licensing to check first.
Smaller pages, same picture
VP9 fits the same quality into 20 to 30 percent less data than H.264. On a landing page with a background loop, that is the difference between a video that plays right away and one the visitor never sees.
Royalty-free and sometimes required
Google released WebM in 2010 with no patent royalties attached, which is why Wikimedia Commons accepts it and rejects MP4. Telegram video stickers have to be WebM as well. MOV, MKV, GIF and the audio formats are in the same format list when you need a different output.
