MP4 to WMV

PowerPoint 2007 and 2010 both play WMV. PowerPoint 2010 plays an MP4 only when QuickTime is installed, and 2007 does not accept MP4 at all. From 2013 onward MP4 works directly, so convert only when the deck has to run on an older machine.

Only slightly. WMV 9 was standardized as VC-1 in 2006 and is about as efficient as H.264, so at the same bitrate the two files differ by a few percent.

Only with the right player. VLC plays WMV on macOS. QuickTime does not, and the Flip4Mac plugin that used to add support is gone. For Apple hardware, convert to MOV or keep the MP4.

Older builds shipped without an H.264 decoder, and some enterprise Windows images remove the media features entirely. WMV avoids both problems because its decoder is part of Windows itself.
