How to convert VOB to MP4

Three steps, and each VOB becomes its own MP4

1. Find the right VOB1

Open the VIDEO_TS folder on the disc or on your copy of it. The film is usually in the largest files, starting with VTS_01_1.VOB, and none of them is over 1 GB. Drag one onto the page.

The MPEG-2 video becomes H.264, and the sound, usually Dolby Digital (AC-3), becomes AAC. A 16:9 disc stays 16:9, and the resolution and frame rate do not change.

Every DVD part fits the limit

The DVD specification caps each VOB at 1 GB, which is exactly the upload limit here. Any single VOB from an unprotected disc can therefore be uploaded as it is, without splitting or trimming.

H.264 stores DVD video far more compactly than MPEG-2. In our test, a widescreen PAL VOB shrank to a fifth of its size as an MP4. The picture was still 720 by 576 and 16:9, and the AAC sound plays on phones and in browsers.

VOB, short for Video Object, is the file format of a DVD-Video disc. It holds the MPEG-2 video, the soundtrack and the menu graphics, and it is stored in the VIDEO_TS folder next to the IFO and BUP files that describe the disc.
